Some coding experience can be gained through college courses and internships with local providers. The best experience is at an actual provider site, after you have completed the above academic and coding courses. In addition, you should have a mentor to guide you through the on-site learning process and provide consistent feedback of your work product. Classroom learning is no substitute for on-the-job training. You can get this experience as a new employee-trainee, a volunteer or an intern. The length of time that you will be considered "in training" will depend on the specific type of coding you are performing and the provider setting where you are working and may range from a minimum of 3 months to as long as a year.
