Coders should have completed coursework in the following areas:
- medical terminology
- anatomy and physiology
- the disease process
Because coding involves an intense review of patient records, documentation and treatment, it is necessary for every coder to have a strong comprehension of all clinical information recorded in the patient’s record. Academic preparation in these areas will not only allow you to perform your job more effectively, it will also make it easier for you to communicate with clinicians and create effective physician queries during the coding process.
How can you find these types of courses? These courses are all part of any health information technology or health information management degree program. A listing of these programs, which are accredited by AHIMA can be found on their web site at www.ahima.org. However, enrolling in a formal degree program may not be the route for everyone wishing to embark on a professional coding career. If you are looking for a more flexible option, many of the programs offer distance or online learning. You may also investigate the courses offered at your local community college. Most will offer courses in all three of these academic areas to sufficiently prepare you for the next step.
